Como La Flor

I was thinking about a conversation I had with my brother who is a DJ. He said there are certain songs that people connect with no matter what age they are. He said one of them is Selena’s “Como La Flor”. It’s a beautiful song by a beautiful soul. I had recently been wanting to do paintings inspired by my favorite songs and so I did. I quickly created (acrylic on canvas) a very beautiful flor de nopal with the song title. I loved it! I then realized I wanted to create it in oil. My son, who is 2, is always next to me when I paint. I occasionally let him paint on the back of the canvas or help him hold the brush while I paint. He’s so independent now. So I actually wasn’t surprised when I walked in and saw a giant red blob on my newly started oil painting. After the shock, I laughed and contemplated my next move. I wanted to wipe it with Turpenoid and start over, however after some Facebook input I decided to go with it and collaborate with my little guy for the first time. What a happy accident it turned out to be. Now that it’s done, I realize this version is so much more appropriate for the meaning of the song. Beautiful and painful all at the same time. I hope every one will connect with this painting as they do with the song.
